Foot Locker South or Nike Cross Nationals Southeast? We will have a list in the coming week of Virginia high school athletes and teams who will be attending either the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte, NC or the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional in Cary, NC, but until then lets a take a vote on who is going where next weekend!
Looking for a race this weekend (11/22)? You got 3 good optionsGreat post-season racing opportunities for runners this weekend to run fast times in the Northern Virginia area with the 3200 meter race at Chantilly High School and Tidewater area with the 5K race at Norfolk Academy, so I thought I'd provide an event for the Richmond area athletes as well as any others who are willing to travel for it. See information below MileStat.com 2M/5K PR Time Trial (Midlothian, VA) Athlete Spotlight: Barbara Strehler (Trinity)
A smile is not the normal expression worn on the faces of those running a 5000 meter race, especially when there's less than a mile to go and the view of the course is dominated by a steep, heartbreaking hill. Yet a genuine smile was what filled the face of Trinity senior, Barbara Strehler, as she charged up the hill of the USATF Virginia Association Championships at Pole Green Park this past Saturday. Athlete Spotlight: Ted Richardson (James River)
For years the Dominion District, consisting of schools from Chesterfield County, has been one of the most competitive districts in the state for cross country, producing a plethora of great runners. Manchester had the state champion boys and girls teams in 1997, and James River won the girls championship in the fall of 2002, but however recently the team to beat recently has been Midlothian High School. With the last four girls state championships, and numerous state championships on the boys side too, Midlothian has had a grip on the Dominion District. Their streak of individual champions in the district however came to an end this year as James River junior Ted Richardson stepped out from Midlothian’s shadow and onto the podium and into the state spotlight. Team Virginia sweeps Battle of the Potomac
For the first time in the meet's three year history, Team Virginia swept both of the team titles at the Battle of the Potomac on Saturday at Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In the post-season event pitting runners from Virginia and Maryland against each other, Virginia had been swept in the inaugural event in 2006 and split wins in 2007 with the Virginia girls winning.
Virginia was led by the individual race winners in both seeded races with Leoule Degfae of Thomas Edison pulling just ahead of DeMatha Catholic's Cory Puffett in the downhill finish for a 16:27 victory in the seeded boys race, while the top 2 girls finishers and only runners breaking 20 minutes were both from Virginia as two transfers this year in Kaitlin Davis of Mountain Virginia (originally from North Carolina) and Erica Howes of W.T. Woodson (originally from New York) were first and second with Davis at 19:49 and Howes at 19:57.
The first 10 finishers from each state comprised the team scoring with the boys scores at 79 points for Virginia and 131 for Maryland, while the girls scores were 82 points for Virginia and 128 for Maryland. BATTLE XC 3 staff completed course preparations for tomorrow's 3rd running of the BATTLE OF THE POTOMAC. Rain is forecast, yet the Smokey Glen Farm venue is the ideal site: rolling hills, varied terrain and now an added element to the course: a stream crossing. "While remeasuring the course today, we realized we had a natural stream crossing that was just not as visible before the leaves came down", commented Race host and director Dave Watt.
Despite the rainy forecast, the BATTLE XC 3 staff is prepared for warm post-race environs: hot fire roasted chicken, hot apple cider and a covered pavilion to help competitors dry off after some classic cross country conditions. "All races will be run tomorrow. The course and venue are ideal for the expected rainy conditions", added Watt. Coach's Corner: Coach Stan Morgan (Midlothian)
Stan Morgan had just started to coach cross country at Midlothian High School when the Lake Braddock girls were wrapping up their four year streak of Group AAA state team championships. Fast forward 20 years later and Coach Morgan is still at Midlothian and during that time has built a program to a similar statewide and nationally recognized stature of Lake Braddock as shown with the Lady Trojans recently matching the feat of four consecutive state cross country titles last weekend at Great Meadow. With only one senior graduating from their top 7, his team has a strong chance of becoming the first AAA school to win five straight state titles. The former football player and quarter miler on the track has become arguably one of the most successful high school cross country coaches ever from the state of Virginia. Most of Morgan's coaching success has came after the age of 60, but he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. MileStat.com's Brandon Miles interviewed Coach Morgan following another state championship by the Midlothian girls.
